The fast bowler Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
